UNIT 5: The Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment

" The Age of Enlightenment, a phrase coined by the German philosopher, Immanuel Kant (22 April 1724 – 12 February 1804), represents the change from antiquity to modernity, the period in history where the modern world began and science replaced superstition."  This libguide supports your Grade 9 ZIS Social Studies Unit.  Once you are finished the unit, you might like to test yourself to see how many of the major thinkers of the time you recognize in the Portrait Gallery below.  Answers 1-10 can be found under the Books and Resources in the ZIS US Library tab or by clicking on the source of each portrait.

2017 Project

To conclude our study of the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment, you will assume the persona of a leading figure of the period and apply for a job in the year 2017! 

I. Procedure:

1. Choose a figure (Use Master List of Thinkers)

2. Research your figure using the internet, reference books, and biographies:

*Take Cornell notes as you go.(ABCLOU) 

*Keep track of your citations; Cornell notes and easybib project.

3. Create a works cited sheet (You must have a minimum 8 academic sources- 3 must be print sources- MLA format)

4. Decide on a job (in the year 2017) for which you would like to apply. Be creative! 

5. Draft a C.V. and a cover letter as your historical figure for the set job in 2017.

6. Edit, revise, make final preparations

7. Attend a job interview as the historical figure!

8. Write a Thank you Note.

II. Research Topics: Take Cornell Notes on the following:

1. Biography (address, nationality, religion, languages spoken)

2. Education (degrees earned, level, location)

3. Work Experience (type of work, location, employer, colleagues, skills learned) 

4. Publications- you have written or contributed to.  

(provide brief summary of 2 of your works- include main themes/ideas)

5. Impact of your Thinker on their field and other fields

(consider how your work changed your fields of study- Galileo with Astronomy)

6. Quotes about you/ Quotes you have made

(Summarize the meaning of your quote and how it relates to your big ideas)

7. Big Ideas

(Summarize 2-3 major ideas/discoveries/achievements of your thinker and how these ideas challenged traditional 

thinking and practice of the time)

8. Legacy and Influence

(Who and what have you influenced? Where can we find your ideas today?)

9. Reference and Friends

(Who has your thinker worked with in the past? Who might your thinker admire today- for what reasons?)

III. Deadlines:

All written work submitted by April 8th.

Interviews: April 12th, 14th, 18th
